Our Tohu
Our tohu was created by local artist and architect Alex Heperi (Ngāti Kahungunu ki Te Wairoa, Ngāti Rakaipaaka, Rongomaiwahine, Ngāpuhi) with design support from Hawke’s Bay-born Tim Hansen of Fay and Walter Graphic Design Studio.

‘’I used a double poutama pattern with a contemporary design interpretation relevant for this kaupapa”, explains Alex. “Poutama is linked to the story of Tāne ascending to the top heaven to retrieve the three kete of knowledge which I thought was fitting as HBREDA wants the people of Hawke’s Bay to better/advance themselves and their whānau economically across all sectors seeking to expand knowledge, increase prosperity and upskill those within Te Matau a Māui."
Providing a tohu with vibrancy and energy that shows growth and progression in a bold, contemporary, but unique way to represent the ethos of HBREDA. The colours are based on the moana referencing the coast of Te Matau a Māui and the wai that connects us all but is also a rich resource and taonga for our region.
The dual and multi directional nature of the tohu alludes to the receiving and giving of knowledge and skills. Referencing the journey of Tāne to Tikitiki-o-rangi and back again with the aid of his brother Tāwhirimātea reminding us that success is a collective venture.’’
